Women wearing veils has a long history, going back to 13th century B.C. Assyria. The ancient Greek women
sometimes used veils. Statues of Persian elite women from Persepolis
show examples of some women wearing veils and some without.
It's also said the in medieval times, the veil was used to protect her from "the evil eye" and was a symbol of purity, chastity, and modesty.
